Ana is a first generation Mexican-American teenager who receives a full scholarship to Columbia University. At odds with what her mother expects of her, Ana realizes that leaving home to continue her education is essential to finding her place in the world as an American and a Chicana. Co-sponsored with the Women’s Center and SHAPE (In Recognition of National Eating Disorder Awareness Week).

Join us for a celebration of International Women’s Day filled with stories of reflection, whimsy, hope, humor, grace, and perseverance. Collectively, LUNAFEST films captivate audiences, compel dialogue, and arm those who participate with both the knowledge and the motivation to make a difference in their communities.  Proceeds will benefit The Breast Cancer Fund, WRAAP (5 cultural centers), and the International Center.  Additional Co-Sponsor: SUBOG. Tickets are $5 for students and $7 for staff, faculty, and community members. Reception to follow.

Wed. 4/2 – Urayoán Noel - Performance Poetry
Urayoán Noel is the author of the books of poetry Las flores del mall (2000) and Kool Logic/La lógica kool (named a Book of 2006 by El Nuevo Día) and of various text-sound collaborations with composer Monxo López. His recent essays, reviews, and translations appear in Bomb, Mandorla and Centro: Journal of the Center for Puerto Rican Studies. He is currently finishing his PhD at NYU and co-directs the Spanic Attack collective. Co-sponsored with PRLS.

Poet, short-story writer, novelist and essayist Mayra Santos is one of the most provocative and vibrant voices of contemporary Puerto Rican and Caribbean literature. Santos Febres has been the recipient of prestigious international prizes. She has also been visiting professor and writer-in-residence at universities throughout Latin America, Europe and the United States. Co-sponsored with CLACS and PRLS. Location and time TBD.

Join us for a presentation with Larry La Fountain-Strokes. He is a great speaker and one of the most important and creative queer studies scholars in the US. He has held teaching positions at Ohio State and Rutgers, and is a graduate of Harvard. Co-sponsored with the Rainbow Center and PRLS.
